Chemical and Optical characterisation of nanomaterials in complex systems
Workshop focusing on the challenges, achievements and future impact of the EMRP Joint Research Project NanoChOp
The properties of nanomaterials are increasingly being used by companies to overcome scientific and technical challenges. These nanomaterials now impact all areas of human life from medical devices and solar cells through to paints, sunscreens and cosmetics.
Nanomaterials are usually characterised for their chemical, physical and optical properties in their pure form or in simple idealised matrices. However, when nanomaterials interact within complex systems their properties can change significantly affecting their functionality and behaviour, and creating a potential risk to human health.
The NanoChOp project has brought together EU research organisations to address this issue. Using their combined expertise, the project partners have developed measurement techniques which can be used to directly characterise nanomaterials in complex matrices and be further developed as underpinning techniques to support the general nanotechnology community.
The NanoChOp workshop will focus on the achievements and long-term impact of the project while seeking to engage stakeholders in a discussion of the remaining challenges for the use of nanoparticles in real life applications.
Speakers at the workshop will include Dr Stefan Weigel, RIKILT - Wageningen UR, Netherlands, Dr Alex Price, BSI, UK and Nick Boley, Government Chemist Programme, LGC, UK. The NanoChOp project partners will also present on the project key outcomes.
Who should attend?
The workshop is aimed at stakeholders in the nanotechnology industries, standardisation organisations, research institutions and academia who have an interest in the properties and behaviour of nanomaterials when used within complex systems, and the methodologies used to characterise them. Opportunities will be
provided for discussion and networking.
The workshop will be held at LGC’s headquarters in Teddington, South West London (www.lgcgroup.com) . The venue is conveniently located for travel by car (easily accessible from the M3, M4 and M25), rail (30 minutes direct from London Waterloo) or air (30 minutes by taxi from Heathrow airport).
